Electric cars in Jersey: prices, charging and costs

Why distances suit an EV
Jersey is about nine miles by five, and the island-wide speed limit is 40mph (gov.je). Most journeys are short, so a smaller battery and an older EV with reduced range can still cover a week of driving. Check the battery's health with the seller, especially on older cars.
Public charging
Jersey Electricity runs the public network, Evolve, with chargers in car parks, supermarkets, workplaces and neighbourhood parking. You need an Evolve account before your first charge (gov.je, Jersey Electricity).

Evolve sets its own prices. Check the current rates with Jersey Electricity: the last published change we found was in May 2025.
Home charging
- Charger grant: the Electric Vehicle Charger Incentive pays £700 towards buying and installing a smart home charger, for Jersey residents who own the property. An approved electrician applies before the work starts (gov.je). Check it is still open before you rely on it.
- Cost of a charger: gov.je puts the average installation at £1,435 (October 2025).
- Overnight rates: Jersey Electricity's Economy 7 tariff from 1 March 2026 is 23.22p a unit by day and 11.74p at night, including GST (Jersey Electricity).
Purchase grants
The Electric Vehicle Purchase Incentive (up to £3,500 towards an EV) closed in December 2024, and the government said it had no plans to run it again this term (gov.je). There is no purchase grant now.
Emissions duty
Fully electric vehicles pay no Vehicle Emissions Duty when first registered in Jersey (gov.je). That matters mainly when importing a car: see importing a car to Jersey.
